I was looking though my pictures this week and realized that I have a problem. Like 95% of my pictures were of me eating food...…So I'll give you the quick run down of some HK favorites!
First. Drinks in HK are the best!! Apparently cold water makes you fat or something so they only serve warm/hot water. So if you want something cold you've got to get something else. The straws here are giant and for someone who loves to chew on straws, it's heaven! They also like to put all kinds of weird things in their drinks! This one's got some black jello ball kind of things called jahnjuh. And then we eat baau all the time. Its basically a roll with stuff inside. This one's got tarro in it. Basically it's a purple pumpkin pie filling. It's pretty great!
Next we have the egg tart. Creamy, sweet, egg goodness in a mini pie crust. Enough said. Word is that KFC has the best, but we're making out way around to try them all.
YOSHINOYAS. Favorite from Japan so it doesn't really count. But there's no topping a beef bowl!
Our Relief Society president is the coolest and gave us hot dogs (shout out to my date man, Uncle Matt!). So really this is American food and not even from Hong Kong.. But they were really good!
This has nothing to do with food. But this is a member family we met with. The Law Family. Cutest baby you ever did see. They're all stars!
So this week. TYPHOON 8. So they have this thing where they rate their typhoons. So if it's a 3 it's just raining hard, but a typhoon 8 means don't leave your apartment or you might get blown all the way to mainland...
So this week we had a typhoon 8! It was cool for like 3 seconds till we realized we would just have to stay inside all day and study and all our appointments would cancel on us. But it was only one day. We had typhoon 3 status going on a lot of the week though, which just meant that we did a lot of finding in the rain! It was awesome!
Wednesday morning though it looked clear and nice and all hunky dory so we went to do our usual pier service in the morning. But after we got off the bus and headed towards the pier, it started POURING out of nowhere!
And we're just these Meigwok yahn in jeans and T-shirts, walking down the streets of Hong Kong with brooms and dustpans and garbage bags with no umbrellas. So... we decided that a little rain had no business stopping us from cleaning that pier. So as everyone ran for cover we walked right through that park and to the pier to pick up some garbage.
It was quite the sight. It's one of those times where there probably should have been some music playing the the background, like "Called to Serve" or maybe something a little more like "Onward Christian Soldiers." Either way it would have been cool. But I think we still looked pretty epic. Everyone hiding under whatever they could find was pointing and in awe that we just kept walking and picking up trash. It was pretty great.
We took this picture when we got home but it doesn't really do it justice. We were soaked. But it was awesome!!
So with all the rain and wind and typhoons I've been thinking a lot about Helaman 5:12. "And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall."
We've had lot of wind and rain going on here, but because we've been in buildings with sure foundations, we haven't had any problems. So where is our foundation? Is it firmly planted in the gospel? Or has the foundation of the gospel only for a summer home that we like to visit when it's convenient?
I know that when we do the little things, making the gospel a priority and planting our feet firmly on the rock of our Redeemer that we can not fall. Satan is working real hard. He doesn't stop. So neither should we. When we are firmly planted on the foundation of the gospel even Typhoon 8's can't shake us.
We were able to meet with our investigator with a baptismal date. She's been reading, but she hasn't really been praying. I really feel that she has the desire to learn, but is just SO busy that making the gospel a priority is a problem for her. And we're really trying to work with her on that. We also met with another investigator who is having trouble grasping the concept of a Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. But we're trying to help her realize how much faith she really already has. We read with her from the scriptures about faith being like a seed. I think it went well and that as we continue to work with her that she will come to believe in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.
Patience is something that I've really had to learn. I've had to realize that I can't force anyone to listen to me or to keep their commitments. I can prepare myself, do my best to teach by the spirit, bear my testimony, pray for them and try my best to create an environment where they can feel the spirit so they themselves can gain a testimony, but ultimately it is up to them. And most of the time it requires some time and a lot of patience.
We were invited to a meeting with the Relief Society and the Bishop this last Sunday. We talked a lot about things we can do to help build the ward and we focused on Less Actives that we could visit. We have over 80 names that we would like to visit, so we're working closely with the Relief Society presidency to get members to come with us to do that Less Active finding. I think the meeting was very good to keep us all on the same page. They were able to see that we are working hard and want to help build this area, and they were also able to help us a lot with some information about some of these people that we are trying to find.
I love you all! Keep working hard! The church is so very true!
Love,
SisRob
